Black Woman Socialization Study

The Black Woman Socialization Study focuses on the messages that Black undergraduate women received while growing up about their identities as Black girls and their awareness of stereotypes about Black women (e.g., Sapphire, Strong Black Woman, and the Jezebel). The study included qualitative in-depth interviews (n = 50) with Black undergraduate women attending predominantly white institutions (PWIs) in the United States.

We asked the women a range of questions to find out more about their perceptions of:

  • Education - How were they treated in school by peers and teachers? What do they think about their university?
  • Body Image - Did they hear messages of colorism (e.g., skin tone bias) or texturism (e.g., hair bias against kinkier curl patterns) when they were growing up?
  • Mental Health - Was mental health a conversation in their home growing up? What do they think about the Strong, Black woman stereotype?
  • Sexual Development - What messages did they receive about dating and sexual relationships?

...and more!
